Hewitt’s Farm is a traditional pick-your-own farm at Chelsfield, just outside Orpington on the Greater London and Kent border. Each October you can pick your own pumpkins and squashes straight from the fields, with no booking and no entry fee: you simply pay by weight for what you take. It is a no-frills, proper working farm rather than a themed event, which is part of its appeal, and it is an easy trip from across south-east London.
About Hewitt’s Farm
Hewitt’s is a long-established family farm of around 78 acres that the family has run for over 45 years, with a farm shop and a pick-your-own operation running from summer into autumn. Through the season you can pick everything from strawberries and plums to apples, sweetcorn and vegetables, with pumpkins and squashes rounding off the year in October. It is a down-to-earth, good-value spot rather than a big attraction.
Pumpkin Picking at Hewitt’s Farm
This is a genuine pick-your-own: you walk the fields and pick your own pumpkins and squashes. The farm grows a good range, around 10 to 15 varieties of pumpkin and squash, including small sugar pumpkins, white Halloween pumpkins and unusual types such as Turk’s Turban, with squashes appearing from mid-September and pumpkins from the start of October. There is no admission charge; you pay by weight for what you pick.
